Prince Kuhio #211 Guest Book - Year 2002

Dec 28 - Jan 5, 2003

Dear Jack & Dorinda,

There are so many things that I could say about Kauai, but nothing could describe the absolute beauty of this island. Your home is perfect!! I wouldn't change a thing about it. Pennie and I felt right at home from the moment we walked through the door. As for a cooking sheet situation, we used aluminum foil. We blew our diet enough, otherwise we would have purchased a cookie sheet and baked some more cookies. When we arrived, our luggage out-weighed us, but now, it's probably the other way around!

Thanks again for everything!! You're the best!

11/30 - 12/9

Aloha!

This place has an Ahhhhhh factor beyond compare. Didn't realize how much stress I hold until we settled in here and then I realized that I was light because there wasn't any stress left.

We spent a year to plan this trip - looked on internet at probably 100+ places to stay - when I inquired about hearing the surf from bed - the answer was "probably" - I was sold. In actuality, the answer is YOU BETCHA! Rustling palm fronds and waves - best lull-la-bye in the world.

Situated between the Prince Kuhio park & the ocean made this A-1. Lanai for sunrise, pool in afternoon and beach at sunset - counts as a full day. Husband on golf spree - Princeville, Lagoons & Poipu. Great internet deal: $375 for all 3 courses. Yesterday was 27 holes at muni course for $7.

Air Kauai worth every cent - smooth and breathtaking! Also found a treasure in Joe's on the Green for Wed/Thurs night dinner. Incredible pot roast and local Hawaiian (live) music. Kalaheo Steak House very good and prices were fair. Lappert's ice cream is fabulous.

Enjoyed the roosters/hens and saw other beautiful island birds as well. Weather has been very cooperative and we feel totally spoiled. This was the only fitting way to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. Thanks Jack & Dorinda for providing such a comfortable place.

Happy Holidays,
Mike & Teri Hoover
Elk Grove, CA (Sacramento)

Suggestion: A calendar to drain pasta would be helpful in the kitchen. Also a baking sheet (cookie pan) would have been useful. Mahalo (heart)

P.S. Pillows were great/abundant & we slept like babies in that massive bed. I missed having a place to deposit jewelry and coins - left a small wooden bowl at bedside. Aloha

Nov 15-19 2002

Dear Jack & Dorinda,

Mahalo for letting us share the comforts and pleasures of your Kauai home. And our thanks to all those who have come before - we benefited from the collective experience.

In our all-too-brief 4 day stay, we've experienced the full spectrum of Kauai weather - rain and gale force winds to sheer perfection. And we've made use of every moment. In addition to the frequently mentioned high spots, we enjoyed Wailua falls, Kilauea Point and Limaha'i Beach (of "South Pacific" fame) to the east and north. When it came to Waimea Canyon / Koke'e Park, the Kalalau Valley Lookout at mile 18, the end of the road, is breathtaking. And the Iliau Loop Trail at mile 8.8 is worth seeking out. Although not market at roadside, it is a short loop at the beginning of Kuhui Trail that offers a wonderful (and quiet) panorama view of the canyon.

But of course, "the best" was at our back door ... wonderful beaches, great snorkeling, and charming Koloa Town. We have a Muskoka Lakes vacation home in Ontario which we also rent out. We've worked to make it comfortable for ourselves and our guests. We appreciate how successful you have been in accomplishing this.

We have three islands ahead - we worry we've been spoiled!

Jack & Dorinda & Future Guests,

We're sitting here in your wonderful home, looking out at the swaying palms and ocean waves lapping at the shore; and recalling all the memories we will take back with us tomorrow of our unforgettable week.

First of all the condo is perfect - all the amenities and more. Sandra was especially pleased with meal preparation and serving equipment. She cooked most of our meals here and found nothing lacing.

The location was perfect also for beach access, closeness to beaches, shopping, etc. And looking out at the park we never felt hemmed in. We walked across the street to the Beach House b each for swimming, snorkeling and watching incredible sunsets.

We enjoyed scenic drives to Waimea Canyon and the lookout over the Na Pali Coast. We swam in Queen's Bath near Princeville and watched some locals jumping from trees ad the rope swing into Kipu Falls pool. These are described in the "Ultimate Kauai Guide Book", by far the best book to have here. The Green Garden Restaurant in Hanapepe serves great food and very personal service.

As far as minor suggestions - maybe a small table for drinks in the bedroom by the chairs (this was our living room!). Also maybe a cord-mounted dimmer on the dining room light? And would a garbage disposal be out of the question? We left a juicer here. A nice lady at church offered us all the oranges we could pick.

Thanks again for your hospitality in our home. A perfect vacation.

Jack & Dorinda ~

Great trip! Thanx for the condo. Weather was beautiful.

New info - anyone interested in learning to surf ... go see Marlo at Kalipake Beach Boys down next to Dukes at Kalipake Beach. He is the best teacher and you can be surfing up a storm!

Aloha, Thanx Again,

Sept 30 - Oct 22, 2002`

Aloha Everyone!

We are home again! It is a wonderful aloha feeling to be back to all the familiar sights and sounds that make our home so special. We enjoyed our regular places and things we have mentioned in previous notes. We also tried some of your suggestions of places to go and things to do. Thank you!

We spent more time at the condo and beach out front this time lounging and doing water sports. We made a few repairs but no major upgrades this time. We may do all tile next time we come out.

We are heading back tonight. As usual our stay was too short. We will miss this place but try to remember the sights and "sounds" until we return.

Aloha,
Jack & Dorinda

Sept 25-30, 2002

Jack & Dorinda,

We so enjoyed our little "hide out". We are here celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and it has been a memorable one!

Dear Jack & Dorinda

My sister and grandson and I want to thank you for the cozy home. The view is awesome and we love the pool. We even enjoy the chameleons - we found a baby in the shower this morning. They are really cute.

Sept 10-17, 2002

Jack & Dorinda,

We really enjoyed staying in your condo. The location is great and we can't believe how it could be raining somewhere else on the island, but not in Poipu! Your condo is very cozy and found everything we needed. We added a couple of things to your closet such as straw hat and floaties.

We went snorkeling at several locations to include Ke'e Beach in the North Shore and always saw more fish right here at the Beach House! One tip for guests - buy some fish food - you wouldn't believe how popular we became! Another tip, have your film developed at Walmart - the price is great and they have the correct colors for the local environment! Another tip: take the helicopter tour. Worth the $$ - we went with Island Helicopters and had a wonderful time. For a Luau - don't go to Kilohana Plantation (Gaylord's) - it was kind of boring!

Jack & Dorinda - may we suggest new pillows - they're a tad lumpy! Other than the pillows - everything was great! Thank you for letting us use your little home! Now, we're on to our new home in Jakarta, Indonesia for a new adventure for at least 3 years. And I am completely and thoroughly enamored of the sights (those beautiful cliffs) on the North Shore!

"Selemat Jalan" - means good by in Indonesian.

Sept 2-10, 2002

Dear Jack & Dorinda

Fantastic first trip to the islands! This is just as we dreamed it would be ... ever since we got married 10 years ago we've wanted to come here. Well, we're convinced that Kauai was the best island choice. We were simply astounded by its beauty. We saw NaPali by air (!!!), sea, and land and its certainly among our favorites. We'd highly recommend a helicopter ride (we did Air Kauai) - you get to see the magical Wai Ale Ale crater - there's simply no way to describe it's beauty - waterfalls coming from everywhere... including straight from heaven it seems.

We had the perfect mix of exciting activities (Luau, snorkeling, hiking, boating, shopping, eating, exploring) and pure relaxation. Just lying on the beach or sleeping in!!

As for your condo - it was perfect. Very comfortable and for us, well located on the island. One suggestion ... could you figure out how to get windows installed like the ones at the Princeville Hotel?!!?!! ~wow!! what a place for a sunset. Of course, we're kidding ... wouldn't change a thing!

While we had a fantastic time, we're ready to head home to our beautiful daughter. She's only 2 1/2 and this is our first time away! Needless to say, we've missed her a lot!

Thanks!!

August 9-16, 2002

Jack & Dorinda,

Aloha! Thank you so much for welcoming us into your home! I'm writing this as I sit on the lanai soaking up the sun. It has rained most of our trip but that has not stopped us one bit!

It has been very nice to wake up to the crows and not all the traffic we have at home. The tropical breeze is an added plus. We did a lot of driving around. We were really glad we rented a jeep. Barking Sands is awesome. My husband and I also completed our open-water dive certification with SeaSport Divers. They were great! We did 6 dives with them and enjoyed them all. Being so close to giant sea turtles is a thrilling experience. Joe's on the Green is fab! Breakfast is generous and easy on the pocketbook. Dinner there (Wednesday) was very romantic. Great adult setting. Joe is a great host and makes you feel at home in his restaurant.

The memories my husband and I will take home will last forever. This has been a great way to celebrate 10 wonderful years together. Again thank you for having us in your home. Mahalo!

Jack & Dorinda,

We thank you! Your condo exudes pride in ownership and we appreciate that. We felt at home instantly. We are here on our honeymoon (the 1st leg, then to my family home on Big Island). Pat lived here many years ago so he was familiar, as I was the new kid - I was able to see and learn so much - I love the North Shore! & Poipu! - the best poke = Ishihara's in Waimea "A must"!! The beach at "Tunnels Surf Spot" - unreal!!

We thank you!
Pat & Becky Webber

July 17 - 24, 2002

We celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary here in paradise! Enjoyed every minute - even the daily misting rain. We have visited Oahu & Maui - This is our first time on Kauai - We will look forward to coming again.

For all those who come after us - may you enjoy all the natural wonders and beauty created by God.
God Bless -

July 10 - 17, 2002

Mahalo Jack & Dorinda!

We had a fabulous week here! Great weather! We love the breeze that flows through the bedroom at night and watching the flowing palms and the ocean at sunrise with a coffee on the balcony! Thanks for the boogie board, beach chairs, mats, beach towels, and flippers, all of which we used! The location is great. So close to Spouting Horn at the end of the road, and watching the sunsets and snorkeling across the road beside the Beach House, and the short drive to the Poipu Shopping Village and Poipu Beach. Other favorite things:

  • Polynesian dance show (free) at 5:00pm on Tues & Thurs at the Poipu Shopping Village.
  • Seafood buffet dinner at the Sheraton on Friday night.
  • Tennis next door on the rooftop at the "Coral Building" (take elevator to 4th floor from parking garage - can also park there).
  • Dinner at Portofinos (near Lihue) with live harp music.
  • Smiths Paradise Luau - good value with the food, drink, show, and gardens all included.
  • Golf! at the municipal course (past Lihue, highway 56) also great value.
  • Snorkeling at the Beach House (in front) and Poipu Beach Park.
  • Waimea Canyon - breathtaking views.

What a memorable 2nd honeymoon (10th anniversary) this has been! We stayed on the East side on our first honeymoon. The South side is definitely mostly sunny!

Aloha & Mahalo again,

June 25 - July 1, 2002

Aloha & Mahalo, Jack & Dorinda!

We came to your beautiful island to celebrate our honeymoon and had an absolutely fabulous time. Prince Kuhio was the perfect spot to stay. We loved the sun of the South Shore, the proximity to all the sites of the island, and your lovely accommodations. We especially made good use of your little extras in the condo, like the cooler and beach chairs (they provided the perfect spot to write our thank you's on the lawn of the Beach House across the way). We definitely feel like we discovered one of the best kept secrets of Poipu in your condo.

Advice for future visitors:

  1. Visit "Activities Depot" in the Poipu Shopping Center - you can save a lot of money if you're willing to visit Embassy's timeshare for 90 minutes. It's only a short time and they serve you lunch.
  2. Do a helicopter tour - it's worth it!
  3. Sheraton Beach is great for swimming.
  4. Go to the supermarket for groceries and save $ on breakfast and lunch.
There's so much more ... take advantage of the whole island, from Tunnels to Waimea Canyon.

We'll be back!

Dear Jack & Dorinda,

Wow from the first time I accessed your web site till we unlocked your front door ... wow! What a great place to finish our 3rd and final week in Kauai. This is our third year in a row to visit the Garden Isle. We love it here and staying in this area is a big shift from our usual Kapaa or Kilauea stay. Your facilities are great. I do miss a towel rack in the kitchen, no biggy. We love the overlook of the park. Sandy my partner loves the gardener's dog (we are a black lab family).

Great book for you visitors: "The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook, 4th Ed". Check their website too (www.wizardpub.com). Met a friend of the author at the health club. Here are our 10 tips about staying in Kauai to pass on to future 211 rentees.

10 tips in no order of priority:

  1. Wait for someone else to use the BBQ and just put your coals with them...
  2. Best close snorkeling: Poipu (Brennecke) & Lawai (Beach House out front) especially by the rock formations.
  3. If you like to work out - Kauai Health Club is convenient and about a 15-20 min drive to Kukui Grove Shopping Center.
  4. Our favorite shopping for food, stuff and bargains - Safeway (Kapaa), Walmart & Longs Drug.
  5. Pace yourself one activity day, one relax day, enjoy the rest.
  6. Best non-guide tour - visit the Hyatt.
  7. Favorite dive shop - Fathom 5 (Koloa)
  8. Take sunset walks
  9. JoJo Shave ice (Waimea) is an experience
  10. Play gold at Kukuiolonu Park, $7/nine holes

Sandy and I really enjoyed our stay here and are looking forward to coming back.

P.S. I donated a man size set of blue fins... enjoy

6/4 - 6/11/02

Mahalo Dorinda & Jack -

We have enjoyed your condo while here! Our kauai visit has been lovely with each day having special memories to take home with us.

We found the Kalaheo Steak House and it was special. Also we enjoyed Joe's for breakfast. Mi Casita (Koloa) is good too. The limahuli Gardens are spectacular as is the sunset at Polihale Beach. We have been everywhere (or close to it) on Kauai. The beaches are super. We are off for a week on Molokai and then back home to Utah.

Sara & Jim Sinclair
P.S. The smoothie at Banana Joe's was yummy.

5.28.02 - 6.4.02

Aloha!

We were here for our honeymoon & I let John plan the trip. I am a "Marriott" girl myself & was a little concerned... However, I found the condo to be perfect for our long stay. We hadn't relaxed in weeks with all of the wedding planning - so was great to have the space and environment to do so. Enjoyed having kitchen for cooking breakfast/lunch with all of the amenities. Helped cut down on $ so we could enjoy fancy dinners out! Recommend Cafe Portofino (in Lihue) and Beach House (across the street) in particular.

Thank you for the hospitality - we're off to Maui now!

5/23/02 - 5/28/02

Aloha Jack & Dorinda,

Well we finally made it here! The R&R was healing both spiritually and physically (although I'm not eating or drinking the fermented fruit that was suggested to cure cancer!). Island Helicopter Grand Tour was awesome! Ron was like a kid again snorkeling across the street and trying to surf after 30 years! Kauai Sea Tours in the raft up Napali Coast was wild and fun! We drove the entire island in 4 days and did so much! Now it's on to Maui - Your condo made us fee right at home!

Mahalo,
Ron & Christine Payseur

May 1, 2002

Aloha Jack & Dorinda,

Our stay here began with our drive through the tunnel of trees. We knew we had come to the right place. Your condo is beautiful and comfortable. Perfect for us!

My husband and I agree that the most amazing thing we have ever seen was the amazing Waimea Canyon. We hiked from mile marker 14 back to Waipoo Falls. The sweeping views were the most beautiful and amazing thing we've ever seen. We saw the Na Pali Coast by Catamaran. HoloHoloCharter did a great job. They stopped for dolphin and turtle experiences. Drove to the East Coast to Opaka Falls and Fern Grotto then on up to the caves at the end of the road. We had a fabulous time!

Mostly ate at "home" but do stop for a Hawaiian Shave Ice at JoJo's on the way to Waimea. Best on the island - I recommend a #2 on macadamian nut ice cream. This was paradise as pictured for us. See you soon.

Mahalo,
Lori and Bill Dietzman

4/20 - 4/28

Aloha Jack & Dorinda,

Wow! From the moment we set foot inside your beautiful condo, Todd and I knew that our vacation would be wonderful and relaxing. Everything we needed was here, from towels and beach chairs to a wonderfully equipped kitchen.

We started each morning with a breakfast on the balcony as we contemplated the day's adventures. A definite must is a helicopter tour of the island. Air Kauai will give the ultimate experience and you will see parts of the island that touch your soul.

We also took a catamaran tour of the Na Pali Coast. If you go with Blue Dolphin Charters you can't go wrong. They spoil you rotten and work hard to show you a great time. We saw whales, dolphins and turtles. Be adventurous and try the scuba diving!

Also be sure to take a day to relax and be a beach bum. Anini Beach may be a bit of a drive but trust us, it will captivate you with its beauty and has some wonderful snorkeling.

So, again - WOW! Mahalo for allowing us to stay in your home and for being so thoughtful in providing all of the extra touches. You helped to make our time on Kauai magical.

Sara & Todd Denver, CO
P.S. Did we say "wow"?!

4/15/02 - 4/20/02

Thank you, Thank you, thank you for a fabulous time in your condo in Paradise! We loved everything here - what a wonderful place for our honeymoon!!

The condo is so beautiful and homey with little touches of love around that make you feel at home right away...

Kauai is truly paradise! Thanks for all the informational material. It really helped to let us know what to see and do. We will be back as soon as we can make it!

Mahalo,
Clorissa and Scott Davanay

4/2/02 - 4/11/02

Mahalo Jack and Dorinda for sharing your great condo. It was perfect for our honeymoon spot. We were married on the beach at Kawailoa Bay on April 5 (a beautiful spot).

Took a helicopter ride (real highlight - highly recommend it). Went to a Luau and enjoyed many hours of R&R and sight seeing (Canyon wonderful). Safeway just past Wailua River seemed to have best food prices - if you are up that way. Video rentals in Koloa Town across from Post Office. Walmart seemed least expensive place to buy Macadamia Nuts, sunglasses, etc. (on main road in Lihue and opened most of the time).

We had our best dinner at the Tidepools at Hyatt. But also had a good meal on a 2/1 coupon at JJ's Broiler. We found Heike at the activity center just past Poipu Shopping Center very helpful. We bought the helicopter ride and luau tickets through her and she gave us 2 -2/1 dinners and a video of helicopter ride that sells for $17 - etc. So we felt we were well taken care of.

Kauai is beautiful and our weather couldn't have been better. We had sun almost every day and your fans make a big difference! Now back to flannel sheets and a heater - at least for a few more months. Aloha - til we're back again.

3/23/2002 - 3/31/2002

Jack & Dorinda

Thanks a bunch! Despite the wet weather, we had a fantastic time. I most enjoyed the snorkeling - right across the street (same for Cindy). Talk to you soon.

Cheers,

3/1/02 - 3/8/02

Aloha,

We LOVED your condo, the island, the weather. We are already starting to look towards coming back here. We'll definitely stay in "211" again. We were totally at home here.

We ate in Koloa several times at Pizz___ (can't remember the name). It's right in the center of town. Great food at reasonable prices. Also, use the coupons in "This Week in Kauai" book. The highlight of our trip was a beach up past Waimea - Polihale State Park. You have to drive on a "rutted" dirt road for about 5 miles into the State Park. The beach is gorgeous and the mountains looked just like Bali Hai out of South Pacific - awesome. Eric took Air Kauai helicopter ride. It unfortunately rained about 75% of the trip but the company was excellent.

Thank you Jack and Dorinda for sharing your 2nd home with us. We'll be back...

Feb 21 - 28, 2002

Aloha,

Denise and I had a great time as usual. This is our fourth year in a row back here. We weren't going to come this year because we just purchased a new home, but this place is magnetic.

Roy's and Keoki's are two of our favorite dining spots, but there are many other great one's all over the island. We saw some whales breaching at Poipu Beach this year, our favorite beach. We did Alerton Gardens this year - Great! There are so many things to do and sights to see. After 4 years, we haven't seen half of it. So I guess we'll see you next year.

Mahalo,
Rob & Denise

January 22 - February 20, 2002

Dear Dorinda and Jack:

Thank you so much for the opportunity to use your wonderful condo for a whole month! This is our second visit to Hawaii and the Garden Island. Our first visit dates back to 1993 when we cruised the islands and stayed a week in Maui and another week on the Big Island. We only had a brief visit to Kauai during the cruise but took the helicopter tour as well as the Wailua River cruise up to the Fern Grotto. This was enough to imprint in hearts the desire to come back to Kauai when the opportunity would rise again.

Years went by and we are now recently retired (Freedom 55 retirees!) so we decided to come back to the Garden Island. During our long stay in Kauai we had the opportunity to discover many wonderful sights and treasures of this island. For the strong legs and healthy heart we recommend the Kalalau Trail hike on the North Coast (at Ke'e beach). It is worth the effort. The views of the Napali Coast awesome! Similarly, we recommend a guided visit and hike in the Waimea Canyon with Kauai Nature Tours. This company is reliable and professional. The 5-6 hour hike is strenuous but we felt so close to nature and learned a lot about geological history of Kauai. They provide a substantial lunch with a choice of drinks to quench your thirst during the hike.

Beaches ... The best sandy beaches in our opinion are Kalahiwai Bay on the North Shore (good size waves, not dangerous, no ripe tides) and Kekaha Beach Park on the West side (beyond Waimea).

We agree that Smiths Paradise Luau is an event not to miss. A stroll in the garden before the meal is a must! Speaking of gardens, the Alerton Garden just a mile south of here is a major attraction for all gardeners, botanists and anyone who appreciates exotic flora. We took time to walk, job around Poipu and we found it very relaxing.

Thank you again. Mahalo,

Marc and Renee Larson

You have a wonderful condo. My mom and I had the best vacation ever. The views here are awesome. We spent a lot of time across the street watching sunsets and whales. We will always remember this trip for a long time to come. We felt right at home. Very comfy. Very well stocked. I hope to return with my husband and to stay here. This is our favorite island. Thank you for making this a trip to remember for a life time.
